The History of Orile Agege LCDA

Orile Agege has a rich political, cultural and socio-economic history that reflects the dynamic evolution of its community. Originally, it was part of the broader Agege Local Government, the LCDA was established in October 2003 by the administration of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the objective is to decentralize governance and bring essential services closer to the people.

Over the years, significant strides have been made in the provision of infrastructures, public health services, educational development, community development, women development, poverty eradication and youth development.

Chieftancy History of Orile Agege

  1. Oba Gbangidu Salami 1 (Alayige of Orile Agege) 

Reign: 1968-1975

  • Recognized as the first Oba of Orile Agege, he played a pivotal role in establishing the traditional rulership structure in the community.
  • Oba Gbangidu Salami laid the groundwok for oeaceful coexistence and cultural identity in Orile Agege, ensuring the town’s recognition within Lagos State.
  • His reign was marked by efforts to unify the people and promote traditional values.

2. Oba Orisanmi Jimoh Okosun

Reign: 1976 (6 months)

  • Although his reign was brief, Oba Orisanmi Jimoh Okosun provided continuity during a period of transition in the community’s leadership.
  • he was instrumental in maintaining stability within the town during his short tenure, rnsuring the progrss made by his predecessor was not lost.

3. Oba Sanni Arewa Komolafe

Reign: 1977-2010

  • Oba Sanni Arewa komolafe’s 33-year reign marked a significant period of transformation and growth for Orile Agege.
  • Known as a visionary leader, he prioritized community development, which included infrastructural improvements and the promotion of education.
  • He championed cultural preservation, ensuring that the rich heritage of Orile Agege was upheld and celebrated through festivals, customs, and community gatherings.
  • Under his leadership, Orile Agege witnessed increased recognition within Lagos State as a hub of cultural and economic activities

4. Oba Ambaliu Akeem Agbedeyi

Reign: 2013 – Present

  • As the current monarch, Oba Ambaliu Akeem Agbedeyi has focused on modernizing the community while respecting its traditional roots.
  • His leadership has emphasized youth empowerment, economic development, and fostering peace and unity in Orile Agege.
  • Oba Agbedeyi has worked closely with government and private institutions to bring infrastructural projects and investments to the town.
  • His reign is characterized by a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, ensuring that Orile Agege remains culturally vibrant while embracig progress.

Development and Leadership

Prince Efunmikan’s settlement in Orile Agege marked the beginning of a thriving community. He became the first Baale (traditional leader) of Agege, and his son, Prince Oshimoro, succeeded him. The lineage continued with Prince Ogunsi, who had five wives and numerous descendants, each contributing to the community’s growth.

Baale Ogunsi’s reign was particularly significant as it coincided with the arrival of white men in the area. His interactions with them led to a seven-year sojourn, during which he gained valuable insights and experiences. However, misunderstandings about his intentions led to his assassination by four men, who were later captured and brought to justice with the help of the white men.

Modern Era and Governance

Following Baale Ogunsi’s death, his son Prince Agbedeyi was installed as the new Baale. His reign saw the introduction of taxation and the expansion of Agege’s influence over numerous villages. Baale Agbedeyi’s leadership was marked by significant infrastructure and social developments, including the construction of roads and public amenities.

The transition to modern governance began with the establishment of Orile Agege LCDA in October 2003 by the administration of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This move aimed to decentralize governance and bring essential services closer to the people.

Current Leadership

The current Alayige (traditional ruler) of Orile Agege is Oba Ambaliu Hakeem Agbedeyi, who was installed on February 10, 2013. Under his leadership, the community has continued to thrive, with significant strides in infrastructure development, public health, education, and community engagement.

Key Initiatives and Services

Orile Agege LCDA is committed to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through various initiatives and services, including:

  • Women Development: Empowerment, skill acquisition and eradication of poverty among the women.
  • Healthcare: Primary healthcare facilities, vaccination programs, and health awareness campaigns.
  • Education: Scholarships, vocational training, and support for local schools.
  • Infrastructure: Road construction, drainage systems, and public amenities.
  • Environmental Services: Cleaner  Environment and Health Wellness.
  • Agricultural and Youth Inclusiveness: Focuses on integrating young people into agriculture-related activities to ensure the sector’s sustainability, innovation, growth and food security.
  • Social Welfare: Women empowerment, support for vulnerable groups, and community cleanliness campaigns.

Community Engagement

The LCDA places a strong emphasis on community engagement, encouraging residents to participate in local governance through town hall meetings, volunteering, and providing feedback. This participatory approach ensures that the needs and concerns of the community are addressed effectively.
